The 1994 debut longplay that became a trip-hop benchmark and won the prestigious Mercury Prize. The album blends melancholic hip-hop beats, the crackle of vinyl samples, live instrumentation, and the piercing, almost cinematic vocals of Beth Gibbons. It is dark, yet amazingly beautiful and deep music. The album's sound is so cinematic that for years many listeners were convinced Portishead used samples from old spy films. In fact, the band created much of this retro sound themselves.
